this glycosis to fat stuff is highly important for hibernation animals- we don't have a sufficient set of enzymes for that so forget this shiit!
Low carb diets couldn't be farther from nonsense! The body does prefer to build glycogen out of sugar, true, and will do it more efficiently this way, but the fact still remains that this is not the only way the body can do it, and carbs are therefore the only non-essential macronutrient. I'm not going to say that the Atkins is a good diet, but this has more to do with the public perception of it, rather than the priciples it employs. A proper cylical ketogenic diet is probably one of the best diets that can be followed for short term weight loss, only superceded imo by a carb cycling diet. Also, contrary to popular belief, the weight lost on a short term diet such as the CKD won't necessarily be put back on as soon as it stops, this is all dependant on the subsequent eating habits of the individual.

As for these diets consisting of 80% of calories coming from protein, well first of all that's pretty much impossible, but more importantly the idea that high levels of protein will cause kidney problems is a myth on a par with creatine causing steroid-like side effects! I am yet to see a recent and reliable peer reviewed study showing that high protein diets will cause kidney problems in inividuals with no pre-existing conditions.
