Ok, duh, I know Smoke on the Water. But don't think I know Black Night.
If you know Smoke on the Water why the hell are you asking about them!!!!!!
Just making conversation. Plus, I didn't know who sang that song. Also I had no idea Deep Purple was still so popular in 2003.

On a sort of related note, I was watching Sharon & Ozzy on Larry King Live last week and Ozzy told a story about meeting a woman (I think in Boston) who asked what he was doing there. He said doing a concert, and she replied "you're in a band too?". So see, everyone isn't familiar with all the classic rock bands of the 70's.

The "duh", and " " made seem like you were almost calling the person who gave you the songs stupid, because it's common knowlege, and everbody knows these songs.....

Anyway, enough of that, have you bought the album yet???

No, no, no! the "duh" and " " was for me because I was the dummy who had heard of the song "Smoke on the Water" and should probably have known who sang it.

But like I said, I'm not a big classic rock fan, so there's probably tons of songs I've heard on the radio over the years that I know and recognize, but have no idea who sings them. I think from now on, I better stick to the threads that discuss Bon Jovi so I can keep myself out of trouble.

To be perfectly honest, i didn't know who Deep Purple was until after my sister bought the vinyl the other week. I knew Smoke on the Water, but didn't know who originally did the song. Now it's all weird, because i'm all of a sudden hit with all this Deep Purple stuff...Not only this but some stuff at home too about DP...it's strange Maybe i should download some of their songs.

And i don't mind all the Deep Purple stuff - Keep talking about them for all could care! Talk about any band -- except for sh!t like Nsync or whatever -- none of the pop sh!t. that's all i'm asking. But there's been no problem with that on this board . So i don't see anything wrong

Not much into Deep Purple - but I do have a couple of Ian Gillan's solo albums.

well said....

depending on what albums she bought give these a listen to and let me know what you think:

highway star
speed king
child in time
black knight
perfect strangers
burn
might just take your life
mistreated
smoke on the water
mandrake root
hush

Umm, no. They were among the first, but no one or two bands "invented" anything...

They aren't. At least if popular means selling records and getting up on the charts.

No music evolves, but you just don't get anything......

When you hear somebody like Dickinson saying that the three bands that make them want to go out, and do their thing (i.e Iron Maiden) are Purple, Zeppelin, and Sabath, you have to respect them. Yes there are other's, but it starts with bands, and there are bands that are remembered for things.....

I've heard many people say that rock started with Dylan. In fact, the famous Manchester New Century Hall gig, when (well that tour) turned electric. The time he was booed by the fans, who heckled calling him 'Judus'..... so he turned to the band and said 'play f^c*in' loud!' The famous song from this is Like A Rollin stone, this is the song people remember things changing.....

I was backstage at a Nice gig a few months ago (I think I've told this story before), and Mr Jackson was telling us about the effect of seing Zeppelin for the fist time. They were playign a festival, and were backstage, when they heard them opening with Communication Breakdown. All three of them said, 'what the hell is that!' and rushed out to see Zeppelin play their set. You can't imagine the effect that Purple, Zeppelin had on people, they were the ones who in the late 60's were considered to be ahead of their time, and really drove rock music.....

In terms of popularity, Deep Purple probably have more loyal fans than Bon Jovi, on the basis they're not popular. Deep Purple don't have singles, chart albums, but they can still tour and play to 3000+ (even up to 20000 in 9 on the back of the fans they have! They're very popular in that sence, in that most of the people who listen to them are geneuen fans, and not just buying it because it's fashonable, or cool.
