This is true though. A 5 year old kid one block from where my kids lived when they were little, killed his Grandmother when he found a gun and played bang bang you're dead!
I never wanted my father-in-law in my house after my kids were born. He was a retired LA cop and he would leave his bag with a loaded gun in it on the floor. One time when my youngest was 6 months old, I found him playing with it. After I turned the air blue yelling at the father-in-law I told him he was not welcome anymore unless he left his gun at home.

We lock the front door, but only at night. The door is never locked during the day because there is always somebody home or someone coming and going. You know that scene in "Fahrenheit 9/11" where Moore walks around a TO neighbourhood and finds the front doors open? Yeah, we're just like that. But we're the only ones. Our neighbours are bloody paranoid - doors always locked and sometimes they arm their security systems when they are in the house!

Geez. Hopefully he did leave his gun at home from that moment on?

Today I just found out that the county I live in is the second safest in all of the USA, so maybe I shall sleep a bit better tonight.

That is completely irresponsible. I can see carrying a loaded firearm (that's called condition 1) or if you don't have any kids storing it like that under your bed or in a dresser drawer, but never just leaving it lay around. He's a horrible example of a gun owner - if he confessed to something like that at a gun show, or a meeting, or on an internet board, he'd either be yelled out or disowned.

Not that I have any problem with kids being exposed to firearms (though 6 months is really too early to start learning how to handle them safely). I, along with the rest of the gun culture believe that kids should be taught to handle them (unloaded) in a safe and disciplined environment, and in a responsible manner by responsible adults.
