Yes, we sponsor a child [in Thailand] through World Vision. Hubby has done so ever since he was in the air force, so we've been doing it for 30 years. My youngest daughter got her high school Indonesian class involved as well about 3 years ago, and now the class [she's finished there now and has just started Uni] sponsor 2 children over there.

Apart from that, we give to The National Heart Foundation and the Cancer Foundation and always support annual fundraising things like "Red Nose Day" [fundraiser for SIDS], "Jeans for Genes" [fundraiser for research into birth defects/diseases etc], "Jelly Baby Day" [fundraiser for juvenile diabetes research] etc.

I think donating to those less fortunate is very important, I always have, either by taking clothes to charity shops, unwanted food to elderly people, I think if you dont ahve the money to give then its important to give your time at least.

I dont however agree with charities knocking on peoples doors or telephoning people.

I barely have enough money for myself as a student. Whether I'm just tight or I just cannot afford to is debateable.

If you ever have a night out then, you give up your night out + spend time giving to someone who never has a night out, thats the idea, soem people can only give 1 hour every few mths.
One hour of help is better than none. Some people are to busy at different times in their life, but as soon as they have time they make time for others , each person has their own circumstances.

I donate a good amount on a few select non-profits.

I never donate over the phone or mail solicitations. I decide when and where I donate my money and I hate being bothered by charities and hit on.

In addition, I volunteer a good amount of my time for a couple of animal rescue groups. I find volunteering time and skills is at least as if not more important than writing a check.
