I doubt he's scared. I've known many people who've been on the virge of death and their faith kept them very calm. The typical attitude I've seen is "I'm going home." Come to think of it, of everyone I've been around who has been terminal, none of them were afraid. (I've spent way too much time in hospitals and nursing homes.)
It doesn't matter if you're right or wrong at that point, only what you believe. I guess it's like Pascal's wager--you might as well have faith because if you have faith and you're right, you come out ahead. If you have faith and you're wrong, you haven't lost anything. If there's life after death, good for you. If there's not, it doesn't matter.
