I don't know if any religion takes a stand with DVD-burners...

If you're talking about regions, there aren't any compatibility issues, it's about the devices, not regions.

DVD-R seems to be a bit more popular that DVD+R. Multi-layered burners are coming, but they're not yet that popular.

If you're buying a burner now, buy a DVD-RW/Multi-layer. That way you have a pretty good combination. Of course it's better if the drive also supports +R's and -RAM's, but newer drives usually do.

I think that the CD format was the only thing that everyone in the world ever agreed upon. Any cd bought can be played anywhere in the world. Video has different regions 1-8 and also 3 different formats PAL, NTSC and SECAM. And then DVDs themselves have different formats +R and -R.

Kathleen
so, if the policy is that way that it should only be viewable in a part of the world, why the dvd-player companies produce against it and they produce Muilti-Region players as was said?!?! I have a dvd player and it plays all the different dvds with different regions....

Companies that release DVDs and companies that manufacture them players don't have same interests. If movie companies would have the final say in the matter, there wouldn't be such things as multi-region players.

They don't. None of the "big" manufacturers produce region-free DVD-players. Only the smaller ones do, and even they are not supposed to do that. They only started doing it because they realized that they could make money by doing it. Some of the bigger ones also add different ways of bypassing the protection, but some don't. I.e. you can't "hack" Panasonic DVD-players to play region-protected DVDs.

Really, what model? There are a few older ones that can be modified, most can't.

The ones that cannot be hacked by a code can usually be mod-chipped can't they?

Anyway I think that a lot of films are now released world-wide simultaneously so that people don't just import them and see them at the cinema here instead.

It is not only the fact that movies are often released early in some places but the cost is a major factor too. I use DVDSoon, a Canadian website to get most of my DVDs now. For example yesterday I ordered Season 4 of Frasier, which cost me <£17 from DVDSoon and most places here in the UK it would cost me around £30 at minimum. I also ordered the new Collectors Edition of Apollo 13 for <£7, and here it costs around £15. Until they charge less for DVDs here people will continue to purchase them from the US and Canada.

It´s just that R1´s have usually more extras than R2 and some might buy R1 only because of that. Things are starting to look better and most of the times we get same extras that are on R1 as well. Packages are usually also much nicer in R1. Price is one thing like you said.
