I do like the packaging on R1 discs purely because they aren't plastered with the crap little red BBFC ratings, which look awful on the front, back and spine of R2 discs.

In terms of extras I don't think I have any specific R1 discs that have anything extra than the R2 ones.

The resolution of NTSC is lower than PAL I think though so there is a quality difference but unless you have a large, high quality TV it isn't noticeable.

Word of warning for those who may never have ordered R1 discs, (people from the UK this is) if an item comes to more than £18 customs take it and add on VAT and then the post office add a ridiculous handling charge. I got Frasier Season 3 not long ago for just over £18 and I ended up paying an extra £7 to get it, albeit this is still cheaper than buying it new in the UK.

Thanks so much for the replies! I think I'll be using DVDshrink so I should be able to take out the zones thingy, right? How's that exactly done then? Where do I do it?

When you run the program select "Open Disc" and it will scan through the disc, it may take a few minutes

Then you can cut out any audio and subtitles you don't want, such as foreign languages, director commentaries, whatever you don't need (the more of such things you cut the less it needs to compress the video). It will auto set every compression.

Then you press Backup, and you select the output directory.

Then you choose the Region tab and can select which region you like or set it to region free

Finally you can set the quality settings. If you want a higher quality output it's best to run the analysis and set it to high quality, but obviously this will take longer.

Obviously make sure you have enough free hard drive space for it to save to. Then just hit OK, and dependant on what settings you used and what spec your pc is it could take 30-60 minutes.
