russian is still pretty much a 3rd world country and I wouldn't put any great sum of money on them not being willing and capable of silencing critics and people who allege crimes like he did.

Russia is still a 3rd world country??? When has Russia ever been a 3rd world country? And what do you base your assumption on? Do you have the impression that people are starving? 90% of the people have access to mass media and less than 10% of the people lack electricity. Internet access is also very high. Is that what you call a 3rd world country?
Russia is simply Russia. While most of the ex-Soviet countries have embraced the "Western way", Russia has never felt the need to adopt western institutions and to impose western law. And according to old Russian standards, if one person is in the way, you simply remove him.
