Isn't it like that in most areas in Europe, with high population densities... For the price of one square meter in Amsterdam, one can buy a lot in Australia - it's just a matter of space
But even then I know quite a lot of students who are looking for a house to buy in Amsterdam (with friends), rather than renting one... as the waiting list for rented houses are practically infinte over here! I registered myself two years ago as someone who's looking for a rented house in Amsterdam. I might be able to find one in about 6 years..., with some luck .

Once you own your own house, taxes aren't AS bad. Trust me.

I would be in inner turmoil if I had to rent an apartment or house. I did that for a couple of years and, I swear, it was like flushing money down a toilet. I'd rather save and have a mortgage so at least I have something to show for all the money spent. It's not that I don't understand where you're coming from though. In some areas of the USA, it's like that. My friends in MA have to rent and what they pay in rent for a mediocre place would be a housepayment in the South. The cost of living varies by region.

That is true. NJ is getting worse and worse.

Really? Maybe Finland is one of the lands with a lot of free space but it's very rare here that people pay rent all of their lives, that happens only in big cities. We're (me and my boyfriend) planning to buy an apartment or preferably a house as soon as we both graduate.
