you are an exception in that though. Most people (well educated) have no idea how big the US actually is and how long of a flight it is from one coast to the other. Most people cannot point to the state of Nevada if you give them a blank map or any other not so popular state (everybody knows where California or Florida is).

I really don't think people in Europe are more worldly than people in the US --- it's just that everybody knows 'their home' better than places on the other side of the globe. I remember a girl in school who at 16 years old believed that all Americans were black (she is German).
OMG you totally stuck me ... you are german and I am totally making a fool of myself :P I thought you were american not german .. holy macaroni

you are right that some ppl have geography difficulties and this happen everywhere on the planet but for an american citizen to live JUST in america with JUST "american concerns" is more common as you globally don't need others to survive and you are isolated almost the whole noth american continent is the usa .. then no need to know somewhere else ... I can't recall this number exactly but how many usa citizens don't have a passport ... your country is huge strong powerful and lead the planet .. then no need to know where is what ...this is said on an exgerating mood of course it is not true for everyone .... in france in some places when you are not from the village in are living in you are a stranger ...so i guess there too they don't know whereare the usa or afghanistan

you are right very right about just knowing THEIR HOME but I have always thought my home was the planet earth ... maybe this is why :P

I always thought (and I am, sort of anyway) I was awful at Geography until I got to Uni and saw that I was one of the best at it. Go figure! (yes, it's cold comfort :P)

I did plenty of map drawing, labelling, placing at school but some of that just didn't stay with me. Rivers and mountians (unless huge ones) I can never remember. Capitals I do much better though. And it also helps to relate stuff you like and people you know to all that.

As for Americans - I think there's everything everywhere to be honest. No country will have 100% of its population knowing what the Nile's meanders are. Mind you, I have been asked where exactly in South America Spain was by an American, but I'd rather not generalise. I also got asked by an English person whether my father was a torero (bullfighter) and things like that.

Just like Europeans mostly only know the touristy states and not ALL the states and their capitals as well as exact location. You Europeans don't need to know that sort of stuff either

Yes, because this country offers soooo many vacation spots that it really isn't necessary to go to another country for skiing, scuba diving, sailing, rock climbing, deserts, rainforests, etc.

I frequently get similar questions about Argentina...there are many people who have no idea where it is...now when you say next to Brasil oh well, then they get it...

Did you really live in Japan? For how long? I'd so love to travel there someday. Sounds like a fascinating country
