There are lots of things to see in New York. Most of the "big things" are covered in a guidebook to the city. These are the usual tourist things - pretty much from South to North:
Take the Staten Island Ferry - just for the ride and the view on the return trip
South Street Seaport
World Trade Center site
Wall Street and original Capital building
Little Italy
Greenwich Village
Union Square
Herold Square/Madison Square Garden
Take the boat to the Statue of Liberty - Circle Line Tours - Leaves from 42nd St.
--These people run boats to the Statue and boat tours completely around the island of Manhattan. The complete circle around Manhattan is well worth the trip and the cost. I take this boat ride about every 5 years and I live here.
Empire State Building - visit the top on a clear day for the view
Radio City Music Hall
Rockefeller Center/Saint Patrick's Cathedral - across the street from one another.
Central Park - any and/or all of it.
Metropolitan Museum of Art - if you don't want to go in - look at it from the park.
Upper West Side/Broadway
Upper East Side/Madison Avenue - where it's so expensive it's fine to look - you can't afford it anyway LOL
There are a million other places - those are the highlights - and I probably missed something. You should take the subway - at least once - just for the experience.
