From Soviet Union. They had the revolution in 1917, and after that Finland declared independent. I think it was 31st of December at 23:00 or something that SU finally signed the independence declaration.
Today, most of the emphasis is given on the WWII veterans who fought Soviet Union in Winter War and Continuation War to keep Finland independent - not a lot is talked about the actual getting independent 86 years ago... It wasn't exactly the prettiest of starts for a country I think, civil war, deciding whether to become a republic or a kingdom (we had a king for a few days) etc... Every year the President has this huge party at the palace for the "elite" - basically 3 hours of shaking hands, it's aired live and I've been looking forward to watching it this year also - starts in an hour  To see who's got the worst and the best dress etc...And of course tonight involves blue-white candles, some Finnish vodka etc... And with the very Finnish storm/snowstorm that is raging outside... Very cozy!!!
