Oops, sorry, I didn't see your post...

So you guys get presents on two days in December, that's unfair.

Not all Dutch celebrate Christmas. We do, but then I'm technically English. Never got presents on Sinterklaas..
Deprived childhood...

Sinterklaas is really Dutch voor Santa Claus (= Sinter Klaas).

He lives in Spain somewhere in a big house. Like Tash said he was a saint and we celebrate that. Sinterklaas gives presents to children.
The boat is always a steamboat and is called "package boat #13" (or #12). He arrives at a place in Holland. It's broadcasted on tv and all.

He has a white horse, in every song refered by the name of 'Schimmel' but he always calls it 'Amerigo'. He is dressed in a red/white robe and has a staff. Here is a picture .

The 'Zwarte Pieten' or 'Black Peters' are not his slaves but his helpers. They are the comedians of the group. Here they are on the steamboat .
They carry bags with candy to give to the children and some have bags with presents in it. There are always 2 main 'Zwarte Pieten' in the story, the Hoofdpiet (the head peter, the supervisor) en the 'Wegwijspiet' (something like the 'point-the-direction-peter, the one who shows the way).

After they arrived and before December 5, children can leave their shoe somewhere in the house (I always put it close to the front door, since we don't have a chimney). They include their wishlist for this year, some carrots and water for Sinterklaas' horse and stuff. The next day the carrot and the list are gone, water has been spilled, and you can find a small present in your shoe. You're always been told to be nice, because Sinterklaas has a big red book with a list of all the names and whether they've been nice. If not, Zwarte Piet puts you in a bag and takes you to Spain.

On december 5, Sinterklaas goes to every house with his 'Pieten'. He travels on his horse over the rooftops (Zwarte Piet is on foot). They leave a bag full op presents at each house. At our house it was a loud bang on the windows, and I rushed to front door, opened it and found the bag. No Sinterklaas or Piet in sight (and I was that quick, but my neighbours were faster I think ). One theory is that Black Peters are black because they go up and down the chimney all the time.

On December 6 Sinterklaas quietly leaves the country.

That's it. I expanded Tash' story a bit.

Happy Sinterklaas everyone!
