Yep, like the sister of a friend. She just had her 4th child, her and husband and 4 children live with her parents as they just can't afford a home for themselves. They are on foodstamps as her being the mother, she can't work as that would be not good for the family (right) and the husband is still in college and only has some random side jobs. She is not on any birthcontrol of course and it won't be long till #5 is announced

All in the name of god.

Why do people feel the need to follow anyone? Are they afraid to think for themselves, or is it just a case of shifting blame and responsibility?
No, they are simply afraid of the fact that, without religion, their etire world would crumble cos they are too scared to accept the fact that once your dead, your dead! No afterlife and no heaven, but believing in that sort of stuff brings people comfort and, provided they don't try to ram their eccentric views down other people's throats (like this old goat in the Vatican is!), I'm happy for them!

Yep - its pathetic that people live their lives by some random figure's interpretation of what a non-existent, all-powerful being desires and not by the common sense and s**t for brains they were born with!

I know a fair few idiots like that myself!

You're over simplifying the reason. Also, nor is it fact, as you state, that there is nothing beyond death.

I am not religious, however I am spiritual. I am content with not pretending to know the answers by following any Religion. I am also content with not pretending that current science standards have the answers either. I'd rather be open to the answers than to shut down to them by rigidly adhering to either. Science is the better option of the two as it is the most open to the facts. But Science does not pretend to have established what you claim as fact as it has not done so yet.

I agree and recognise the fact that I over-simplified the reason but as I said before, I know too many people that cling to religion so blindly that it's infuriating - much like the couple in the story spunkywho referred to.

And I agree that science hasn't proven anything conclusively but it is undoubtedly closer to the true answer than strict allegiance to a fictional text or the worshipping of a mythological figure/figures.

Plus the fact that everything within science is considered a theory, as nothing in life is absolute, but religion claims more to be true, yet has no evidence other than an old book, and science has physical evidence to support it.

Brilliant. Let's see what's next. The TV is evil?

Well the tv like everything else can be evil ....

I think the pope is trying to say that the way we live our lives are resulting in the destruction of family.

Divorce well that obvious that it ruins familes , if u have a divorce u r no longer a family unit together.

Some people choosing to live together can be seen as not being completely committed to their relationship/family and therefore the lack of marriage contract can be seen as potential family ruining.

artifical birth control, a lot of people take the pill and think they can have sex without responsibility , sometimes the pill doesnt work and causes a lot of developing family breakdown problems .

If we all decided to be Gay the world would not continue therefore the family ruined.

The above comments are just to explain perhaps why a religious person may make comments about the subjects potentionally causing a family breakdown, I am just putting these forward and I dont nessecarily agree with these comments, especially the pill one. I would like to state I am not a fan of the pope or the catholic faith, however I respect it and try to understand where the opinons come from.

That is if you define a family as two parents being married.

My son most definitely has a family even though his parents are divorced.

A family consists of a lot more people than biological parents and has nothing to do with the marital status of the two.....
