Default Hidden Messages In Songs

There was a disscussion about this on another board I visit, and was wondering what some of the JT's opinions were on this:
Music Reversals
Backward messages in music (commonly known as Backward Masking) have been a controversy ever since the late 60s, when messages were found backwards on some Beatles' albums that hinted Paul McCartney had died. The controversy raged extensively in the late 70s and early 80s when religious fundamentalists claimed that Satan possessed the minds of singers, causing them to insert messages backwards into albums. As we now know, many of these backward messages were in fact examples of Reverse Speech in music. Speech reversals occur naturally in all forms of speech, sung or spoken. This site lists some examples of Reverse Speech in music.

From http://www.reversespeech.com/music_reversals.htm

Do you think that artists deliberately put messages into their songs that can be heard when the song's played backwards? Who'd actually listen to songs backwards anyway??

When you listen to them backwards you can't hear specific words, not until someone suggests what it might sound like, and then you manage to hear it.

You should listen to the hidden messages in Pink Floyd songs, cause they are really hidden messages that was put there on purpose, when you listen to them normally, you cant tell what is in it, but you play it reverse, it changes to real words...

for example, on the song "Empty spaces" from the album "The wall" in the middle of the song you hear Roger Waters voice saying something but its not clear, but when you play it reverse, you clearly here something like: "Congratulations! you've found the secret message, please call old pink to get you prize..." or something like that.

another one, is on Roger Waters solo album "Amused to death" on the song "Perfect sense - part 1" there is a hidden message from Waters to Stanley Kubrick calling him a BOOK BURNER!

If you listen to songs in reverse it's all gibberish, it isn't until you read the "hidden lyrics" on websites like that one that you suddenly "hear" the message, when in fact it was only suggested that you hear that.

I doubt floyd have anywhere near as much hidden stuff in their songs as people like to think or theorise. Playing dark side of the moon along to the wizard of Oz?

who the **** came up with that one.

anyways it's called suggestism or something like that. as neil said, you hear nothing clearly until someone says hey he said burn the school down backwards there.

The dude from twisted sister blew apart a court case against them saying they put backward messages in their sopngs that led to a murder playing songs that had stuff like "cabbage soup" etc... in them

thats what im saying, in those 2 songs i mentioned, when you hear the songs normally, you just hear gibberish words, but when you play it reverse, you hear the real words, its just because they recorded the words, then reversed them and finally put them on the songs... thats different from those mentioned on the list saz sent.

and about the Wizard of oz, i heard about it but i havent tried it, but it absolutely sound rubbish to me.

I also heard of a courtcase, possibly the same one, where the band went away and recorded something to play for the judge, who could make no sense of anything until they gave him a sheet of lyrics, which had completely stupid things on, obviously it must be what Jim reffered to.

I've tried recording messages to play backwards, but it's really difficult, there is no way you could write a song that had one meaning in one way and a clear meaning in reverse.

One good use of reverse speaking though was in the film Top Secret, they filmed a scene backwards, including learning their dialogue backwards (which sounds strange even though they obviously tried hard), and it was quite funny.

if it's been recorded backwards then that's different but as you pointed. the other way round, it's gibberish.... things recorded straight played backwards are gibberish.

When this debate was really hot - many people still used tape. It was easy to play a tape backwards. Has anyone figured out how to play a cd backwards without ripping it and using a wav editor?

Kathleen
