Default honour killings

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3494270.stm

"Turkish single mother in 'honour killing'

A Turkish woman has been murdered in an Istanbul hospital where she was already being treated for injuries sustained in a so-called honour attack.
Hospital sources told BBC News Online that Guldunya Toren, 24, was being treated after being shot and left for dead, when the second attack happened.

After the first attack, which happened on Wednesday, she told journalists she feared for her life.

Early on Thursday morning a man claiming to be a relative told staff he wanted to visit her, before shooting her dead.

Inquiries launched

It is thought the "honour killing" may have been carried out because Ms Toren had had a child out of wedlock, according to Turkey's semi-official news agency, Anatolia.

Police are now looking for Ms Toren's two brothers, aged 20 and 24, the agency says.

They have also launched an investigation as to why she was not given protection after the first attempt on her life, Turkish reports say.

Interviewed in hospital shortly after the first attempt, she asked for police protection.

"I know they won't want me to live. I'm scared," she told reporters.

Conservative village

But she declined to give away the identities of her attackers.

Ms Toren came from a small village in the conservative south-east of the country.

Turkish media said she was sent to Istanbul to live with relatives while she had the baby.

She gave birth to a baby boy two months ago. "

ok we know it's a whole different culture and this doesn't sound so terrible to some of them but a country who wants to join the EU at least should stop practising honour killings. because it is something very common there. also check this out;

"Men who kill because of honour are regarded very highly in prison and their feet are washed by inmates.

Mother’s who kill babies which were conceived out of wedlock only gets 4-8 years. If a mother kills a baby which was conceived in marriage, she gets a life sentence without parole or the death sentence.

Honour killings are not recorded in the judicial statistics but men who kill in the name of the honour get reduced sentences - usually 1\4 or1\8th less than the regular homicide.

The choice of weapon is usually associated with economical status, eg. a gun for richer families etc. Traditionally, they were thrown into the well. "

one thing we agree on. problem is that it's already happening over here.

there's beena handful of them in the past year. just recently an asian girl that had been missing for months was found dead and it's pretty obvious it was her parents that did it or at least ordered it.

different culture or not, it's a despicable thing and i think it shows the full extent of how some countries are more developed than others.

thing is that a country which struggles to prove that they have reached the european standards and they can be a part of what we call "modern world" don't do almost anything to stop such brutal acts.
yes- it's a different society and culture. people grow up believing in other values. that doesn't show inferiority though. but the truth is that their government must do something in order to stop such acts against human life.
(well and the "modern world" should stop invading foreign countries and killing their people but that's a different story :P ).

It speaks volumes when certain people will gladly murder a member of their family before they'll shed a ritual that could come straight from the stone age.

Default proof is in the pudding

that's why Turkey should never be allowed to be part of the European Union, too many of the muslims living in the asian part of the nation are traditionalists ,backward and stoneage and to a point fundamentalists.
I'd be happy with the European part of Turkey being admitted but not the rest.# yeah cut off the head and leave the rest of the stinking carcase to rot.
