I've lost 3 cats, and you have my sympathy. Luckily I haven't had to watch any of them slowly waste away. It must be terrible.

Thanks for the replies. Thanks for the poem, Maria. I've never read that one before, but I'm going to print it out and put it in a frame with a picture of Tino. I feel for you, Vallie, Dawn, & Kathleen for going through this at times too. I think there will be a brindle tabby ghost in my house.

Tino was 11 years old. Since he was a housecat and wasn't a carrier for any of the inherited diseases like leukemia or FIV, I always hoped he would be one of those that lived an exceptionally long life. My aunt had a cat that lived 29 or 30 years and another that lived 21. But it was better to let him go now because letting him live was really selfish. Even the vet I was talking with yesterday said that he could understand my reluctance and the other vet's reluctance to put him to sleep because of the way he was so alert and affectionate.

Becky, perhaps this is asking for too much - but could you possibly post a picture of him? I would love to see him

I will as soon as I can. I haven't taken any pictures of him since I got my digital camera, so I'll have to search through some old CDs to see if I can find a pic from when he was healthy. I have several in frames, but they were taken with my old 35mm.

Becky, I am so sorry. He was a beautiful kitty...reminds me of one I had when I was younger. I now how hard it is to lose a pet. I lost my dog back in February and it was the hardest thing I ever dealt with, next to losing my father. Not a day goes by that I don't think about her. Pets leave a special place in our hearts. Even with my new girl now, I still miss my Amber all the time. I'm crying now just thinking about her. I agree with Kathleen though, getting a new one helps heal your heart. It took a while before I was ready to get a new dog, but Jersey will never know how much she helped my heart mend. And Maria, I love that poem!
