The only gifts we kept unopened under the tree when our kids were young were gifts that we gave to each other. Therefore our kids knew that people gave family members and special friends Christmas presents personally. The Christmas toys for the kids were kept in hiding (in the basement usually) until they went to bed on Christmas Eve and then we brought them upstairs and put them under the tree. That way - when they got up on Christmas morning a whole bunch more presents were there than there were the night before - ergo - Santa came.
