The first one I posted should extract only the audio as mp3. Haven't checked it though.
Auto Gordian Knot is the best freeware I can think of to get a whole DVD as avi on CD size. You can even split it on several CDs. You need to declare video and audio compression to reduce the sizes, and for audio there is of course mp3 an option.
As far as I remember older versions of Gordian Knot (not Auto GK) delivered the separated audio and video files (via Smartripper) that you needed to combine again later on and compress to get the final avi file. Auto GK automates all that, so it's probably not what you're looking for. I believe though you can get the audio files out of it somehow.
Not too professional, but you could also just record the sound via "What you hear" with Audacity, the best free audio recording and editing software.
