I would say being anorexic is worse. Its an illness, you can be overweight and happy but I dont think you can say the same for someone who is anorexic.

It's so sad to see someone with aneorxia and know that anything you do or say won't help. My cousin is an off an on aneorxic - She'll go a week without eating, making everyone concerned obviously. There's nothing that you or anyone can say that will change her mind about starving herself; she'll yell and lash out if you so much as dare to try to get her to eat just even an apple. I'm deeply concerned about her health and mentality; her mother was considering counseling for her (there's something more wrong with her, too, that i'm not certain upon what though) and i hope that still in the plan, because if she doesn't get any help, she may as well condem herself to poor health and mentality. and the sad part of this all is that she's only 10 years old.

I agree with Tom; there's nothing funny about this topic.

Both can be bad, although I think anorexia has more dangers surrounding it. When I read Becky's story, it is so scary to think there are so many women (and men) out there who starve themselves every day just to fit a socially accepted weight. It is quite distressing that we let society dictate these kinds of things to us, with no conscience to the health implications they might have.

You're the only one that finds that funny then, because I don't. Maybe if you are a small person height wise you can go to the kids section but if all you are is what you are joking about, being "skinny", then you still buy clothes normally.

Also nothing worse than someone who laughs alone at his own jokes

Nice to see you have such an interesting concern on the subject. You didn't like Supersonic calling you chubby either. Becky made a few serious comments about the matter and all you can say is good point followed by the fact you have overtaken someone in posts.
Calm down, I understand what she said... I wasn't the only one laughing at that joke too.. My friend thought it was funny and it was in good fun. I do have a concern but I wanted to see which everyone thought was worse and so far, that really isn't happening. So calm down.

What is your problem ryan? You seem to think that everyone is “having a go” at you when merely all they are trying to do is tell you that your comment was very immature. You cannot fob everyone off by telling them to calm down as if they’re in the wrong.

eating disorders of any kind or being overweight- they're not a joke..please dont treat them like they are.

I think both are two extremes that have to be avoided..the best thing is to just concentrate on being healthy and accepting your body, cause itīs the only one u got..

There was this girl at the university we all knew, and she was anorexic for the most part of the time we were with her at uni..and sheīs this very energetic and outgoing person, but it was just horrible looking at her deteriorate this way.. her friends tried talking to her but it would only work for a certain period of time..after a while she would go back to losing a lot of weight again..

I think itīs horrible how everywhere u look thereīs this huge pressure to look perfect and have a thin body, and itīs sad how many girls (for the most part, though men go thru this too) hurt themselves to "fit" in.

Anyways, thatīs my 2 cents on the subject.

My friends teenage daughter is dealing with anorexia right now. She's already thin and pretty, but has been starving herself for the last few months. My friend just had to take her to the hospital last week again. Anorexia is a terrible disease that is only made worse by todays society. We have such incredibly high standards for girls to live by anymore.

On the flip side, being overweight is just as bad. Severe obesity is just as deadly as starving yourself. Plus, society turns you into an outcast if you don't fit the perfect body mold.

I would get vicious stomach aches at least once a week. My side continually hurt, sometimes to the point of not being able to walk (gall bladder). I had major problems with feminine issues. And the WORST part is since I did start eating like a human being again, I gain weight easily because I managed to kill my metabolism.

It's probably part of the reason my immune system is so weak now.

The key is moderation. No one should starve themselves to loose weight. No one should feel like being thin is more important than being healthy. It's NOT worth it!

But you know what, if I didn't have a better grasp on reality, I would want to go back to that for the sake of being as thin as possible just because of the pressure society places on girls about their looks. To this day, part of me wants to have that kind of "control." I look back on photos and even at the thinnest I ever was, at the time, I thought I was huge, like 300 lbs or something. It's so weird to look back and see just HOW screwed up your body perception can be. Eating disorders are like alcoholism. There's no cure. And since food is part of life, they're one of the hardest mental issues a person can deal with.

Becky
Thank you for your story Becky. I have always been obsessed myself, not to the point where I make myself sick, but enough where it is always on my mind. Even though I have never suffered from anorexia, I can certainly relate to what you are saying.

I don't think this is the kind of problem you can joke about. It's a very serious matter, and many people knows someone who has gone through it and the last thing they want to hear is jokes about it!

My friend's cousin has been anorexic for over two years. Doctors are at a loss about what else to do. She always manages to discontinue her treatments, etc, and, sad to say, her parents don't look after her as much as they should. Yes they're concerned, etc, but she still living by herself, with no one to watch what she does or what she eats. But she just refuses to go live with her parents... and they won't make her do it.

I think extreme obesity is as worrying as anorexia is. The difference, IMO, lies in the fact that obessity has less (but still some) psychologic side effects, and therefore it's easier to treat. As Becky pointed out, an anorexic person completely loses her perception of their body, and that's very difficult to change.
