here goes:

best guitarists ever (they can't be put in an order):

Ritchie Blackmore
Hendrix
Jimmy Page
Eric Clapton
Mark Knoppfler
Jan Akerman
Gary Moore
Joe Satriani
Steve Vai
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Michael Schenker
Uli Jon Roth
Richie Sambora
Eddie Van Halen
David Gilmour
Eric Johnson

(at least they are all the different influences on my guitar playing - you can hear little bits of them all in my style)

Blackmore has written some of the most amazing songs - one of the most prolific rock song writers

deep purple > rainbow - 2 amazing bands

rock, blues, classical... you name it he's done it

and he has an amazing ability of finding the best vocalists in the world to work with him:

gillan
coverdale
hughes
dougie white
graham bonnet
Joe-Lynn Turner (bit weaker though)

I think Page is pretty damn near, along with Knopfler, Clapton, Beck and a few others. Hendrix is the obvious one though.

I think Walter is right, guitar playing is not something where you can classify people. It's a question of taste. I know Steve Vai has an amazing technique, but his playing does nothing for me. Ace Frehley might not have the chops, but he can play just the right thing for a KISS song.

There can't be "the ultimate" guitarist, just like there can't be the best singer. There are just different opinions...

Jim Bon Jovi's the best with Richie and Mark Knoplfer coming close 2nd and 3rd.

Jimmy Page is no where near the top IMO. the zep recording are ok but any live performances ive seen have been a real mess. he overplays way too much and it sounds really bad from a guitarists point of view.

one of the tutors at my college was the drummer for the alex harvey band and has worked or met with just about everyone in music in the past 40 years and was telling us about a gig he did with page and plant before any of them were really big, in a dingy social club in coatbridge ( a not very nice area just n the outskirts of glasgow) said they were incredible music wise but no one would listen because they wanted to dance and stuff so alex harvey and co got up and everyone went wild pretty cool that ive been taught by a dude who showed up robert plant and jimmy page

Alex Harvey was great - though very weird and theatrical
