Default "Is this a dry county?"

I picked up some groceries after work and as I was leaving someone in the parking lot stopped me and said, "I have a question. Is this a dry county?"

It was hard to keep a straight face as I told her that yes, I believe it is.

how does the whole dry country concept work? does it mean you can't drink anywhere there?

the only thing even close to it ive heard of hear was the main street down the road having a vote back in the day. it was basically to decide if they wanted pubs on the street or not. one side voted yes, one voted no so now all the pubs are on one side of the main street.

Most "dry counties" don't allow stores to sell hard liquor like whiskey, bourbon, scotch. They can sell beer. I'm not sure what the point is. If you get behind the wheel and kill someone they're just as dead whether you were drinking beer or whiskey.

I had never heard of - or seen - a "Dry County" until I was 16 and drove cross country with my parents. My Dad was a beer drinker - not to excess - he just liked a beer (or two) with dinner. I forget which state we were in but when he ordered beer with dinner - it was as if he were a serial killer LOL. No way was beer available - ever. He made do.

Sometime after I was married my husband and I drove through Utah and we drove all night. At about 6 in the morning we stopped for breakfast and I ordered a cup of tea. Now you have to realize that all my life people have made fun of me because I drink tea instead of the hard stuff (coffee). Well everyone in that restaurant at 6:00 am turned around as if an alien had walked through the doors. Nope - they had none of that devil's brew there - no tea allowed.

Strange customs everywhere I guess.

And I agree with you Becky - one can get just as smashed (or dead) on beer as any other alcohol. It doesn't make sense to me.

One thing I hate about traveling outside the south is that you can't get a decent glass of freshly brewed iced tea. You ask for iced tea and they try to pass off that shit like Thierry got at the diner as "tea." {{{cringe}}}

That stuff was awful - no matter where you came from. Remember though - we were making do - we weren't eating at a turkey farm LOL.

True! I really only like water and tea. If the water isn't pristine, at least the tea covers the taste of chlorine or whatever is in the water. I'll drink soda if there's no alternative or if I'm trying to ward off a migraine.

I'm telling you Becky, here..... People are just obsessed with ****ing tea! When you go to convenient stores and such, 99% of them carry gallon jugs of sweet tea next to all the soda and juices. It amazes me sometimes. How can anyone drink a gallon of that shit?
