I had never heard of - or seen - a "Dry County" until I was 16 and drove cross country with my parents. My Dad was a beer drinker - not to excess - he just liked a beer (or two) with dinner. I forget which state we were in but when he ordered beer with dinner - it was as if he were a serial killer LOL. No way was beer available - ever. He made do.
Sometime after I was married my husband and I drove through Utah and we drove all night. At about 6 in the morning we stopped for breakfast and I ordered a cup of tea. Now you have to realize that all my life people have made fun of me because I drink tea instead of the hard stuff (coffee). Well everyone in that restaurant at 6:00 am turned around as if an alien had walked through the doors. Nope - they had none of that devil's brew there - no tea allowed.
Strange customs everywhere I guess.
And I agree with you Becky - one can get just as smashed (or dead) on beer as any other alcohol. It doesn't make sense to me.
