Reinstall XP Jess, I had the same problem a few months ago

you wont lose any data (its not the same as a format)

the man from Hewlett Packard said the virus blocked the hard drive, the only solution was to format the whole thing, i have lost everything ... photos, songs, documents and all my husband's stuff for work ....

I'm sorry you lost everything And there's no way to get them back? They're gone? Forever? oh, Jess - that's sad I'm sorry and hope everything can get worked out nicely between you and your computer.

That's horrible Jess, I feel for you! It's a lot of things on your computer, and to lose it all must be quite horrible...

did he say what virus it was?


somtimes the helpline will just say "you have a virus, format C:/" if they cant be bothered to go through all the steps of a HDD recovery with you :/

the same happened with me 3 weeks ago... new icons just kept appearing on the desktop (and more and more programmes were added to the startup folder).

I managed to download cd software and AV - but the programmes wouldn't install because of the virus and so i lost all my files that wouldn't fit on a floppy disc

i'd been writing and recording songs so i lost all the wavedata for those also

Goose also has a point though and most of the time the "helpine" just tells you to format and reinstall :s
