A friend and business associate of teenybopper hiphopper Drake has been shot to death.
Until now, Drake has managed to maneuver between his cuddly mainstream appeal and his shadowy "street level" support system:
Quote:
Toronto Sun.com: ...(There is)...speculation that Drake want(s) to keep his “street credibility” intact by not appearing to condone “snitching,” considered heresy in the hip-hop world. Some cite...the lyrics in his song No Tellin’ as a possible explanation: "Yeah, police comin’ round lookin’ for some help/on a case they gotta solve/we never help ’em."
...(A) police officer, now retired, questioned why Drake had invited a...rapper who is facing firearms, assault and kidnapping charges as his opening act on...(his) Boy Meets World tour...“(W)hy is he permitted to leave the country and tour with somebody who is a literal mentor for the city’s youth?”
In January, Drake signed...Baka Not Nice, a longtime member of his inner circle, to his record label...In 2015, (Baka) pleaded guilty to...(and drew) a six-month sentence...for assaulting a woman (in exchange for) procuring and human trafficking charges (being) dropped.
“Drake supports a domestic abuser and criminal? Maple Leaf Sports must be so proud of their Raptors (pro basketball team) ambassador. What an example for today’s youth,” wrote (an) anonymous poster.

While he has expressed his condolences, acted as a pallbearer, and gotten a memorial tattoo, Drake has been less than vigorous about appealing to the public for help in finding the perpetrators. Maybe it really is street ethics; maybe it's that it would be very bad for Drake business-wise to have the police scrutinizing his "shadows" too closely. On the other hand, maybe his friend's death is simply:
Meanwhile, Cardi B, whose #1 single has sent her up the lady hiphop stripper pole of success to join Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, Nicky Minaj, Iggy Azalea and White Chyna, is looking at her situation more realistically:
