i'm not a pet lover by any stretch of the imagination but when a family pet goes it's like a family member dying.

i had a dog that lived to about 14 and i'd had hiom since i coudl remember then one night he took a stroke and couldn;t walk or anything and we put him down. still sad to think about

I'm so sorry to hear about your cat.

I don't know if you have ever seen this poem, but it's a really sweet one.

Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to
someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There
are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so
they can run and play together. There is plenty of food
and water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and
comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are
restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or
maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we
remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small
thing: they miss someone very special to them; who had to
be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one
suddenly stops and looks into the distance. The bright eyes
are intent; the eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to break
away from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying
him faster and faster. YOU have been spotted, and when you and
your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion,
never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your
hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into
the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but
never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together......."

That's horrible Jess... I am truely sorry. I have a feeling my cat will be going soon. He is old. Found him at K-Mart after Church back in 94. I crawled into my arms and put his paws around my neck. I cried and cried and begged to take him home. He's been with us every since. He sleeps with me every night. He's my best friend. Anyways, hope you feel better Jess.

I just saw this Jess - you have my sympathies and thoughts. I have 2 cats now and have had others for many years. It's always very sad when they die - it is a little like losing a family member. Of course - my solution to losing a cat has always been to adopt another kitten - that usually raises my spirits

Thank you everyone, it's nice to know you understand. Eeyore, this is just beautiful, thanks very much. The kids (more the older one) spent an hour crying tonight, just as the parents in fact. This cat was so special, even my dog is feeling strange, right now she's crying too. We've lost another cat recently, he visited us from time to time for food and milk, he disappeared before Christmas and my dog, Gypsy, has a tumor, it's getting bigger and bigger these days, i have to go and see the vet again tomorrow. I know you will all say it's stupid but i'm feeling bad, because i have the impression i have abandoned my lovely cat. It was so difficult to see what was happening and i wasn't able to do anything for helping him. I found an article on the web about what he's died of, it says in a few hours the cat is in a coma and a few days after he dies. Thanks again - it helps me.
