Like I've said, Live 8 isn't a bad thing, but people think it's a bigger deal than it actually is. All that's happening is that some people are hoping that some other people will decide to cancel the debts of African countries.

What should've been done is collect a shitload of money by selling tickets, merchendaise, food, drink, whatever and then give _all_ of the money to charities. Plus make the statements they're making now. The free concerts won't help, money will.

From the Associated Press:

LIVE 8 GIFT BASKETS
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- When you're dealing with celebrities, even
good deeds come along with gift baskets. The stars performing for
free in the Live Eight concerts this weekend will get a gift bag
full of goodies, including thousand-dollar suits, satellite radios,
two-thousand-dollar guitars and six-thousand-dollar watches. Even
the bag itself is a designer duffel bag worth three-thousand
dollars.

More than $12,000 worth of goodies. Not bad for a 20 minute free performance.

No bad at all. Real charity. Help them poor artists who can't even afford to buy clothes for themselves.

The only right thing for the artists to do would be do not accept those and ask for the money to be spent in charity instead.

This whole thing is starting to look more and more like a joke.

There's no such thing as free lunch. And it seems that there's no such thing as free performance either. It's a goddamn shame that artists participating in such event would even consider accepting that kind of reward. From what I've read, it's not a charity event, its a goddamn halo-shining event for everyone participating. Awareness, yeah right. Like there would be people around who didn't know that there are problems in Africa.

Decent thing for every common person to do would be not to participate, but to take all the money u thought to spend on it and use to charity directly. And don't even say it's free. You still need to travel, eat, drink and so on. But no, you much rather go and enjoy the awareness. Duh!

It is very common that the perfomers/lecturers/artists/etc. will receive a token of gratitude from the charity, they donate their services to.

We'd hold charity events and every single time did we either have hard cash or otherwise goodies for the people that drew the crowd. It's just what you do. Cash is obvious where it comes from - from other people's donations or fundraisers. Goods are usually donated by companies and don't cost the charity anything - it's another venue for the companies to advertise their goods. I'd say about 80% of the people take and keep their 'presents' - some will say they want the charity to keep it.

Charity is merely business as usual. It's run like a business and functions like one - only difference is that a 'good cause' will receive the profits, not an individual or shareholders.

i think chris martin nailed it when he said there two groups of ppl : those that get of their assess and TRY to do something and those who just sit back and do nothing while mocking the other side for trying.

This sort of belongs here.

I was really moved and "shocked" by one of the "commercials" in-between performances. It was the one saying that if 50,000 died in France or in Italy or the UK, or any of the G8 countries the leaders would act at once. Yet that was happening in Africa every day and nothing was being done. I know it's sadly a well-known fact but it really showed that some lives seem to be more valuable than others in this day and age.
