London gas attack O.o
'Terror gas attack foiled' claim
12.47PM, Tue Apr 6 2004
Police in London have foiled a poison gas attack in the UK, it has been claimed.
An American news channel has reported that Scotland Yard discovered the plot to use a highly toxic chemical on the London Underground, at Gatwick Airport or a busy shopping centre.
They were apparently tipped off by operators at GCHQ, the Government's eavesdropping centre which can listen in on phone calls and read e-mails.
The poison was named as osmium tetroxide, which is mainly used in laboratories for research. It irritates the eyes, throat and lungs and can blind and even kill by 'drowning' the victim.
Osmium tetroxide, along with many other potentially harmful materials, can be bought over the internet without checks - although the issue is likely to lead for calls for tighter restrictions on the trade in industrial chemicals
