Hostels never (or very, very rarely) have private rooms. The whole idea is based on the fact that it's cheaper if more people use the same room and bathroom.

And "cheap", "hotel" and "London" do not mix. The one you found seems to be about 20 kms from the central, if I read the map correctly.

I spent a summer in Crystal Palace near Croydon and believe me it's not close to central London. What you save in accommodation you will spend - or even more - in transport.

I suggest you look around these websites that have good offers, such as London nights or GTA hotels. Last summer we got a really good hotel where the standard price per night was about 299 pounds. I think we paid about 110 euros (about 75 pounds) per night. Not cheap, but an incredible offer anyway. And the hotel was just to die for.

Beware of bugs in London hotels, though.

EDIT: oh, also check www.tripadvisor.com Very useful, since you will get a picture of the hotel before you book a room.

ah right you want private rooms.

digs are going to be about as expensive in edinburgh as london.

i was looking at booking a room in edinburgh for me n my girlfriend the other day and the cheapest for a proper hotel i could find was about £70 a room if not more.

look we're 6 people and we kinda hoped to get the same room in a hostel (for six people). But when we try to book it, they say that we will get different rooms. So, i think it's gonna be a hotel after all...
in edinburgh we found an apartment for 6 people and we want to book it... fingers crossed.
but i'm wondering if all these sites with the hotel offers are trustworthy.
