edinburgh for history and culture

glasgow for shopping and nightlife

"highlands" for scenery and general freezing coldness.

if you can get some digs aviemore is an excellent little town to check out in the highlands. nice walks / bike trails etc...

depends when you're here.

in the summer in glasgow and edinburgh should be fairly warm though the summers been kinda mild here so far.

the further north you go the more you're going to need heavier clothes. i wouldn't necesarilly say all out winter stuff but a decent jacket and proper boots / shoes is probably a good idea if you're going north.

if you've got a car you should check out~:

the wallace monument in stirling (not too far a drive from edinburgh)

edinburgh castle, parliament building, princes garden, the royal mile etc... in edinburgh

the cathedral, lords provost / pretty much everything at the top of the high street in glasgow

maybe loch lommond just outside glasgow if you get the weather

fort william but drive from glasgow, it's worth the drive just to go through the hills of glencoe.

its good that you've got a car because from glasgow and edinburgh everything you really need or would want to see isn't more than a few hours away. you can drive to edinburgh gtrom glasgow and vice versa in less than an hour on the motorwar depending on how much one chooses to observe the speed limit.

btw edinburgh is horrible to drive in once you get to the centre just so you know.

glasgow's probably horrible too if you don't know the place because just about every street is one way.

good thing is the "tourist" bit of glasgow isn't too far from the gallowgate / calton / barrowlands area which has free parking though i wouldn't plan on keeping the car their later on at night for your own safety.

I've been in northern Scotland and Orkney Islands in 2003 with exceptionally hot weather / a heat wave - it was max 24 degrees centigrade . Usually it's probably a wise thing to pack some warm clothes, especially when you plan to travel to the north .

Oh and be sure to pack lots of insect repellent as well... midges are nasty little creatures and in some areas you can get such huge swarms of midges that the skies literally turn black .

You could check out Stirling if you get a chance, quite a lot to do/ see round here. Stirling Castle, Wallace Monument etc.

It's only around 45 mins from glasgow, a bit further from edinburgh.

It's quite warm here today, but it was pouring with rain at the weekend, so you may aswell pack a variety of clothes, cos you never know what it's gonna be like here.

Hope this helps!!

thanx for your tips guys! they're very helpful!
in athens we have 46 degrees, so i guess a bit chilliness would be just perfect for me right now
we can't find a place to stay in london though.. the hotels are either very expensive or dirty and in disreputable districts.

the hostels have booked all their private rooms. now we're looking for a central hotel.. about 100 euros per night (the double room) is a very good price... but it is impossible for six people to book rooms in the same hotel.
which are the worst, most dangerous areas in london?
