long shot - interference on dvd player

I know this is a long shot and the stupid people at the cable company have no clue (well I didn't even get to talk to a techie, only the phone lady, grr.)


Anyway, here is my problem:

I used to have basic cable and had no problems watching dvds. Everything was normal. Then, I get HDTV which is similar to digital cable, where they hook up a box to the TV which gets you all the channels, etc. Ever since I got that HDTV, I have a very loud and annoying interference noise when trying to watch a dvd - needless to say, I can't watch dvds now.


When I called, the first lady told me to run the DVD cable through the HDTV box, as it has the three color hookup on the front. I tried that, but then I can't find the channel on TV. Plus, I am not sure what program (Video 1 (which is my regular DVD), Video 2, Component 1 (which is HDTV), or Component2) to choose, but none seem to be the right one.

The second lady I spoke to told me she has never heard of hooking the DVD player up through the HDTV box and is sure that you have to hook it up directly to the TV. Other than that, she was useless and had no clue what she was talking about.

If anybody has any idea what this interference might cause, please let me know. I'll give it a couple more days, then I'll cancel my HDTV service, but I am afraid the digital cable service might be similar (though in the old house I had digital cable without any interference noise from my DVD player).

Oh, and I tried playing with the volume button, but that is a stupid suggestion (again from the cable company) because the volume is that same whether I use the TV remote or the cable remote for DVD purposes (unlike TV purposes).

I don't quite catch this. Now did you have digital cable or not before your HDTV. I thought you said there was no noise before the HDTV box?

It sounds like an impedance noise.
Could you pull the HDTV box out of the system and try if it works then?
What colours is the three colour hook-up?

I had digital cable for years. Then I moved and had basic cable. Then I got HDTV AND the problems.

What's impedance noise? I tried to disconnect the box from the TV and I tried to simply turning it off. No difference. Not sure if I could disconnect it from the actual wall TV outlet.....

The colors are red, white and yellow.

If it's a proper setup then it could be a proper composite RGB but more than likely its probably the aux inputs (yellow/red/white), it could just be the cables I'd guess.

If Video1 is your regular DVD channel then that is probably RGB SCART, Video2 should be RGB SCART too so you should be able to use that for the HDTV, as it would be better than the aux cables, and then I'd guess the 2 component channels are the aux component channels.

It just sounds like you need to plug your DVD into the TV via SCART instead of via the aux composite cables.

I called a third time and the last thing I can try is disconnecting the box from the wall .... I'll try that later on tonight. What a stupid system.

Oh, my TV has a built in tuner - if that means anything.

As I thought the cables are the yellow/white/red. The yellow one carries the picture, the white is left channel and the red is right channel audio.

The best cable to use is an RGB SCART cable, I presume that TV's there do have SCART sockets aswell as the aux ones. The sockets are usually on the back, whereas the aux ones are on the front, which I guess you use as you mentioned that.



SCART socket, there will probably be 2 of those on the back of your TV.



That is what the SCART cable looks like, you should be able to get a couple cheap (well the more you pay the better quality really)

They are better quality than the composite aux ones though and with cables in the back they make the setup look neater than having cables stuck out at the front

No clue. Have the same problem with my Digital Cable, except when I do unplug the cable box from my TV it stops.

Oh and I don't know what you were thinking calling the Cable company, they don't know how to do anything except tell you sh** you already know.

I mean, when had there been no noise? Before you moved or before HDTV? What change exactly caused the noise?

It's a noise caused by a somewhat unbalanced resistance in your connected devices.

Really disconnect the box from your TV and everything that is connected with your DVD/TV setup. The noise is still there?

Do you have a sound system connected to your TV/DVD?

Do NEVER use this for a DVD signal! That's like buying a Porsche but only going by bike.

I know what it could be. That's why I was asking what it actually is.
And actually, the colours may be red, green and blue, but it would be a YUV component field, not composite.

Is this tuner still connected with an antenna cable?
