Well I don't have a plasma screen or digital projector (yet :P) so I just use a SCART lead (albeit a gold plated ribbon one), my player does have the yellow/white/red i/o but as you said it's pointless to use them with any format higher in quality than a 20 year old vhs tape. S-Video is better than those I believe but SCART is the best standard format I think.

It is built in - you don't see it. (I know this sounds stupid, but that is all I know about it. Yes, it is supposed to act as a room antenna if there was no cable)

If you watch most things through the HDTV anyway the tuner will only receive your analogue channels, which you may also receive via the HDTV (here we get the analogue tv stations via digital satellite, cable and digital freeview too so no real need for analogue tuners)

I mean, when had there been no noise? Before you moved or before HDTV? What change exactly caused the noise?
The problem started when I got HDTV. I moved and had basic cable - no problem. A few days later the cable dude came and hooked up the box - problems started.

What's impedance noise?
It's a noise caused by a somewhat unbalanced resistance in your connected devices.
ahhhhh!!!

( like I now know )

I tried to disconnect the box from the TV and I tried to simply turning it off. No difference. Not sure if I could disconnect it from the actual wall TV outlet.....
Really disconnect the box from your TV and everything that is connected with your DVD/TV setup. The noise is still there?
I only unplugged the box from the TV. The box was still plugged into the wall. I'll try unplugging it from the wall tonight.

Do you have a sound system connected to your TV/DVD?
No, don't have a boy friend that will do that for me

Do NEVER use this for a DVD signal! That's like buying a Porsche but only going by bike.
It's what came with my DVD player. Though, I do remember now that the dude that sold me the TV told me to buy a different cable thingy for $150!!!! I passed. Do I need to go back and get i?

You don't need to spend so much on a cable, they are only really if you have very high quality equipment.

Here you can get standard SCART leads for a few £, just make sure it has the full set of pins, otherwise it won't be any better quality than the composite aux cables. It's better to get a gold plater one if you can too. They aren't expensive, just look around.

I am lazy quoting properly now, so I'll just write down what comes up.

Neil, SCART (a full 21-pinned) is the good and standard way to go. The best solution however would be the YUV component connection since this is the format in which the picture is on the DVD.
(SCART carries actually different signals and it can be set in DVD/TV setups which one to use.)

Maria, I meant is your TV still connected with the normal cable that brought you your programmes BEFORE the HDTV box came? If so, try without.

And before you moved you had digital cable? And you had the same noise?

Where the box is plugged to the wall is there anything else that goes from the plug in the wall to your TV/DVD? If not, why should it make a difference when you unplug the box from the wall while it was already unpluged from your TV?
If there was nothing between the box and your TV/DVD and the noise is still there, then it's probably not the box.

About the cable: get a SCART cable. Make sure your TV and your DVD have at least one SCART plug (see pictures Neil posted). Make sure to get a full pinned version (21 pins). A gold plated would be nice, too.
It isn't more than EUR 10, to give you a comparison.

I thought it was only the more expensive DVD players that had the YUV connections though, and the same goes for the TV's. If you only have a pretty cheap DVD player and TV they probably won't have the YUV so SCART is the best option.

My DVD player doesn't have the YUV connections and it's not a cheap one, it's not really expensive either, mid-range I suppose, but it doesn't have them, nor does my TV (which was about the cheapest one I could get, had to due to being able to afford it).
I got a gold plated ribbon SCART for about £16/€24 though and compared to the cheap SCART I had before there is a noticeable difference.

Well, like I said, the best option would be the YUV connection, but of course this is anything but standard, so SCART is the way to go.

I'm off to bed now.

ehm, I don't think I understand this correctly. When I had basic cable, I had my own old cable-TV link. When the dude hooked up the box, he brought his own cable.

No, I didn't have the noise problem. But I also had a different TV. (sorry for being so confusing)

hmm, I KNOW the box has something to do with the noise. Simply because I didn't have noise problems before I had the box (smart huh?). I assume that while the box is not hooked up to the TV itself, the TV picks up some interference noise (probably due to the built in receiver). Hence, even if the box is unplugged from the TV and turned off, enough 'stuff' is still transmitted to the box to cause this interference. At least that is my theory

It's got to be the box

Do you think that will get rid of the impedance noise? And why is there such a big money difference? I remember the sales guy saying that if I ever wanted surround sound, I should get this $150 cable. So, there are other alternatives? I'll check it out later this week.

Thanks so much guys!!!!!

what does that YUV connection look like?

I might try to take pics from the back of the TV later, cause it has oodles of plug ins.
