Do you think their god actually cares where they get married?

This is why religion sucks. Religion is a prime example of taking something good and turning it into a complete waste.

I believe god would look a lot more favourably on the parents if they actually embraced the different believes in their future son/daughter in law.

Instead of focusing on senseless religious rules, people should go out and actually DO good.

good point my man. though i don't believe in God in the usual sense, if i did i think you make alot of good points. for an all loving, all knowing presence, it's abit hypocritical for people to use it as an excuse for war, racism and general bullshit like arranged marriages etc...

in reply to the thomas statement

at the rout of it. all religion could be considered as a type of brainwashing ie the Bible, Koran, National Enquirer says thist so you must do it.

i don't buy people ie priests etc... telling us something you can't never have and never will rpove ie God exists and we must follow his rules. and these church leaders themselves do not even know God exists. fair enough they may trully believe God exists but prove it then....

thats my theory on brainwashing but my theory on god is pretty long so it'll have to wait cos my girlfriend just got here. but i will tell u all definetely.(prepares for the religious backlash)

i have friends where the parents are of different religions. one of them is an atheist and the other follows the religion of the father (but that's questionable )

also, i have 2 friends each of whose parents are very strict Jews. one of them is really religious and won't even apply to a uni that doesn't have a J-Soc. while the other really couldn't care less abt anything Jewish at all.

so i guess today just because your parents are one religion doesn't mean you'll end up following the same religion in the end.

true to a point. However, these friends of yours most likely were allowed to make their own decision.

I can indoctrinate a child into thinking whatever I want and turn him/her into a religious fanatic, or, I can help the child understand other religions and help him/her to make their own decisions.

I am catholic because my parents were catholic. I do not practice any of the catholic "stuff" (whatever you call it), nor do I like the catholic church. I went to an all-girls catholic high-school which should keep me in therapy for live. However, I have no inclination to change or abandon my religion. I consider myself a christian (because it is most familiar to me), but really I could be anything. The name doesn't matter nor does it mean anything. My parents call me an atheist My Mom is certain I'll go to hell Well, I know better cause my god ain't that superficial and hypocritical to judge me on my Sunday mass attendance but rather on what I've been doing to help others.

My Mom, on the other hand, chooses to "pray" for people (needless to say we don't get along )

one of my mates mums pretty much thte same. she's really into practicing Catholicism and he doesn't give a shit about it.

She makes him go to mass every Sunday and she's told him if he doesn't go he's not staying in the house and i mean c mon thats not exactly giving them any choice is it? so he's forced to go along (as his brothers and sister were) because his mums crazy about things like that.

i dunno tho i think it's more respectful not to go at all than to force a hungover/drunk person to go when they don't want to u know.
