Led Zeppelin was labeled everything, from blues to hard rock to psychedelic to progressive to heavy metal. I guess none of these is too far from the truth. You can hear all those elements in their music. To me, they are closest to hard rock but I can definitely hear metal parts. Deep Purple is somewhere in the middle. I would actually tend to put them closer to Sabbath.

Nowadays I guess, hard rock is simply called Rock 'n' Roll. At least that's what I do, as you can even read in my first post.

Offended, no. Tired with assholes who try to annoy me, yes. You're pathetic for trying to "offend" me and even more pathetic for admitting it. Sad, really, but whatever rocks your boat.

i always use the code of: if it's about shagging women then it's rock and if its about things like war and mythology/religion then it's metal. you can't really use the musical style as a guide anymore. I.e. nothing else matters by metallica, they're a metal band but no way on earth is that a metal song.

that's my humble opinion anyway

huh...putting random words in other people's mouth was always what you were best at. I never tried to offend you, nevertheless you felt offended. That simply made me laugh. Do you see the difference?

And I see you use more and more swear words lately. What are you so frustrated with? Not that I really cared but I tried to be polite...

Maybe i shouldnt bring up all the apparent 'sub genres' of metal/hard rock...? As theres numerous according to some people. It does start to get a bit ridiculous.
Classic metal is NOTHING like metal that some newer bands pass for today. And Metallica these days are more 'hard rock' than metal - 'Kill em all'' is a fine example of 'heavy metal' i guess, their albums 'Load' and 'Reload' allbeit excellent, arent 'metal' really.

And id disagree about the melody statement that Devilson said, Iron Maiden for example are extremley melodic, what with all their dualing guitars and killer riffs.

I think if it comes down to it, its probaly one of the most basic features of a song/band that makes it metal or rock - the tempo, coupled with how heavy/distorted the guitar sound is.

But I could soon find myself running in circles here i realise so i will just stop talking.

No, I don't see the difference. If you think you offended me, you're wrong. But you brought it up, not me. You tried to offend me with a totally unrelevant statement and even admitted that you posted that just to try and piss me off. Sad.

Did you ever see the new rules? Swearing isn't forbidden anymore. I didn't want my threads to be locked for using swear words. Now I don't have to worry. And you're never polite, don't fool yourself.

He's definetely metal. LOL. He has sharpened teeth, like Dee Snider of Twisted Sister, he has that wild look and when he plays the drums he bangs his head like his life depended on it.

Seriously now you won't find an explanation of what's metal and whats hard rock better than the one Spunky gave you. And I disagree with Kill 'Em All being a heavy metal album, it's thrash metal and there's a huge difference. Load and Reload are just mal core albums and definitely not metal. And please let's not start tyhe endless debate about Metallica and if they betrayed their metal roots or not.

In terms of music the best definition of metal is Iron Maiden. Black Sabbath may be considered the fathers of heavy metal but they were simply the band that started the movement and their music, at least for me, isn't metal, it's more hard rock. For me metal started with the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal movement in the late 70's and with bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Saxon, Motorhead and my personal favorite Tokyo Blade.

In general metal is more brutal than hard rock and louder. The drums are usually faster, guitar solos are also faster and metal is more technical than hard rock. Nowadays there are very few bands playing hard rock, at least the way it was played in the 70s and 80s from bands like Deep Purple, UFO, Uriah Heep etc. I will agree with the guy who said hard rock is more fun. Metal is more serious and with few exceptions metal has way more serious lyrics. At least it used to.

The bottom line is that you will hear people categorizing a band in many different categories depending on their personal taste, as I just did. But it doesn't really matter what's the label of a band. If you like their music just put your own label on the band if you want. There's no right or wrong.
