Thank you. I agree with me as well. LOL

Man I could talk for hours about metal, the definitions, what's metal and what's not and the different sub genres of metal.

The bottom line is that you will hear people categorizing a band in many different categories depending on their personal taste, as I just did. But it doesn't really matter what's the label of a band. If you like their music just put your own label on the band if you want. There's no right or wrong.
I dont really care which bands are metal or not - thing is, that a few nights ago, I was watching a documentary about metal and it struck me that its hard to give a clear definition on what exactly metal is. A lot of bands are apparently being categorized in both the heavy metal genre and the hard rock genre. Which makes it even more difficult for me to grasp the concept of metal.

I used to have the definition "if I like it, then its rock - if I dont, then its metal". But while watching that documentary, some bands were highlighted which were described as metal, even though I do like them
Apart from that: I seem to surround myself with metal fans these days who try to convert me into a metal chick and I gotta admit: capitulation is near.

So if one would like to know more about metal, which albums should be picked up then?

Thanks so far, you all.

One of my personal favourites, Fear of the dark, with Iron Maiden.

The difference lies within the melody. Rock 'n' roll has more melody, still has the blues, the r'n'b in it. Metal is completly free of that.

As Joe Perry was saying it: "Metal is not sexy, hard rock is!"

Of course, a lot of the times you have borderline cases like early Judas Priest records, WASP or some Twisted Sister. Actually, I am sure nobody can give you a perfect definition (although Iceman will pretend he did). I always listen to my ear. Hard Rock is simply more FUN!
Can't complain with that. It's a pretty good description.

Metal for me is just too loud. I mean there are songs that I like by Metallica and Black Sabbath, etc, but there are others that are simply just noise. Hard rock is definately the way to go.

I'll give you some of my personal favorites.

As far as classic metal goes you should try Iron Maiden (The # of the Beast, Piece Of Mind and Powerslave), Judas Priest (Screaming For Vengeance, British Steel and definitely Sad Wings Of Destiny), Motorhead (Motorhead and Ace Of Spades), Accept (Metal Heart and the one with "Balls to the Wall", which I don't remember the title), Saxon (Strong Arm Of The Law), Ozzy (Blizzard Of Ozz and Diary Of A Madman), Dio (Holy Diver, Last In Line), Tokyo Blade (Night Of The Blade).

If you want something more epic then you should try something from Manowar (Hail To England, Into Glory Ride), Virgin Steele (the last one Visions Of Eden is pretty amazing actually) or maybe Rhapsody (especially their debut and their latest Triumph or Agony).

Now if you want to try somethign more heavy then maybe some thrash metal with Exodus (Bonded By Blood), Metallica (Kill Em All and Ride The Lightning), Slayer (Hell Awaits, South Of Heaven and their latest which again I can't remember the title), or maybe Testament (Practise what you preach) or Kreator (Pleasure and Pain).

I could go on forever with sub genres but you are probably already thinking that I am a weirdo, so I'll stop here

Oh yes And I forgot to mention the best band after maiden... Therion. Just listen to Vovin and you'll be blown away. If that doesn't convert you I don't know what will.

Thank's Paul. I think it's Paul, I hope I'm not wrong. It's a pitty we never got to meet at the Milton Keyne's concerts. Maybe when I come over for the Maiden concert in Christmas...

OK then Russ. Sorry for the mix up. Christmas it is then, we'll talk about metal and other things over a pint of Guiness in a nice English pub!
