Only the people who don't have as much money are the ones who cry about others having too much. You can't have too much money. You can have too little sense though...

Even if money can't buy happiness, I'd sure like the opportunity to find out!

Yup - that's what I always said. And - even if it can't buy happiness it sure can make you more comfortable while you are miserable

that's an odd way to look at this.

who are the 'many'? People in England? In NYC? In Aberdeen, WA? In Uganda? Who exactly are the 'many' cause I know for sure I make more per day than 'many' make in a year ... yet, I am also sure, nobody would think my salary is undeserved or frivolous or outrageous or spectacular....

There are many people who have more sense than money.... what's the difference? Why should one have to do with the other?

Well I meant in the UK, as it's unfair of me to judge things in other countries that I don't know as much about. I just meant that it seems 'unfair' (I know, I know, life isn't fair) that someone can get paid more to kick a ball around a field for 2 hours than anyone on minimum wage here would earn in a year.
Then again, they only get paid so much because thousands of people (for some reason) are willing to pay through the nose to see them, week after week.

The true value is not their kicking a ball around the pitch, but providing a shared experience that an entire country (or even more) can experience together.

People with this skill are amazingly few and far between. Not quite one in a million, but probably at least one in a hundred thousand.

Does it not stand to reason that they should be in the top 1/100,000th of earners?

Sure is a fun topic to talk about. I was just wondering where it started - i read your first post an attempt to see whether an opinion you had already formed was coreect or not.

Many thousands of people do it for fun, in their free time. Does it matter if they're 'good' at it or not? I bet any game you like, played between people of equal ability, would be enjoyable.

By that very logic though any job that is skilled should be equally high paid. What about doctors, fire fighters, police, teachers? All of the people who make a big difference. Obviously everyone plays their part in society, but I have far more admiration for someone who saves lives than someone who kicks a ball around.

Sorry. Wasn't clear enough. The ability to provide a universal experience, of value to the majority of a given society, only comes with exceptional skill
(or exceptional fortune). It is the level of ability that matters, not the actual task being undertaken.

All Jon Bon Jovi does is stand infront of a microphone and spend a few days each year writing songs. We value him (and most probably wouldn't begrudge him is wealth) because his level of talent genuinely brings people together, such as in this forum.

well personally as someone who'll be a teacher this time next year I think I will contribute more to society than wayne rooney and his gobshite of a bird will ever do and thus should be paid more

BUT

i think it was maria that kinda covered the point, a teacher in goa will be paid pennies compared to what 13 year old paperboys earn in the UK so we can't really complain THAT much

besides there's only so much money you need if one can live comfortably (even if it's without the 89" plasma and 2 holidays a year, one should be happy that they can live with a roof over their head and food on the table.
