Wouldn't you say that the punishment is a bit overblown though?
When your house burns down, even if you're lucky enough to not lose a loved one, you don't lose your house only, you lose every little thing you treasured, family memories, objects, pictures, etc... a lot of things with great sentimental value insurance companies (if any) will never be able to pay back.

I hate seeing animals hurt for no real reasons, but mice can be a pain in the ass (and not just Mickey Mouse or Jerry) and in the end that's all it was, a mouse. Or should one have his house crushed for crushing a mosquito?

You're twisting things. I did not say that he deserved to have his house burned down. I said I felt bad for anyone whose house would burn. At the same time, he deserved some kind of penalty for throwing a live animal into a fire. Would it be different if it had been a cute little puppy instead of a nasty little mouse?

Fair enough.

I don't quite see your point here, but in all honesty I can't say I'd see both cases with the exact same feeling, and I'm sure few people would.
I think it's got to do with the animal's size, life expectancy, possible interactions (and their quality) with humans and maybe even the position on the evolution scale and the food chain. On all levels we're driven to show more respect to a puppy than to a mouse, to a dolphin than to a lobster.
Than doesn't mean it's ok to kill the "smaller" animal, it means it apparently takes more cruelty to kill the "bigger" one. Then maybe the punishment should be set accordingly.

I agree with you in theory, I really do, but it's not the way I really feel, and I'm having a hard time believing you'd actually feel the same for any animal.

Do you really have the same compassion for a puppy as you have for a fly?

You're kidding right?

Just in case :

animal

etymology: Latin, from animale, from anima=soul

Any of a kingdom (Animalia) of living things including many-celled organisms and often many of the single-celled ones (as protozoans) that typically differ from plants in having cells without cellulose walls, in lacking chlorophyll and the capacity for photosynthesis, in requiring more complex food materials (as proteins), in being organized to a greater degree of complexity, and in having the capacity for spontaneous movement and rapid motor responses to stimulation

So a fly qualifies .

It is. All flies are insects, all insects are animals, so all flies are animals.

Now do you have as much compassion for flies and mice?
