Yeah, I was expecting my mum to complain about more mugs and how I'll never need them all (my excuse was having several in order to have back-ups for when others when dirty) but she liked it anyway.
What I buy at every place I visit and not only cities, but every single museum, venue, whatever, with a gift shop is a pencil and a bookmark. I have a huge collection by now but fortunately they are more easily stored than mugs :P
