Default Need your opinions please!

OK, I need some opinions. Especially from people who aren't involved in this situation. Here goes. Right now, I am a supervisor at my job. I work in a retail store and being a supervisor means that I've got to deal with all the problems. From customer complaints to unhappy associates at work. The opportunity came up for me to move into the accounting office starting November 1. The job is much nicer, however, it means I'd be confined to a small little room all day. I was OK with that until yesterday. Now, they want to make a "team leader/supervisor" in the office. I used to work in there, so I figured I'd apply for the position. I've got 6 years of supervisor experience already and plus I already have worked in the office. Apparently, one of the other ladies who already works in there took offense to me signing up for the team leader job. She didn't think it was right for me to apply for the position, and "resents" the fact that I would apply for it. She thinks she should be the one to get the job (and honestly, she probably will get it). She has not spoken to me since she saw that I applied for the job unless it was absolutely necessary. This is someone that I used to talk to about stuff all the time! It's not like we didn't get along to begin with. We were actually rather close.

So, here's my dilema. I don't know anymore if I want to take the position (not as the team leader yet, that hasn't been decided, but just as a regular associate) anymore. If this lady is going to be resentful of me before I even get into the office, what is going to happen once I am actually in there! Especially if she becomes my supervisor. I spoke to a manager about it today, and he took her side. He's the one that told me she resented me applying for the team leader job. I don't know if I want to go into a job where I'm going to be having problems with my coworkers, just because it's an easier job. Or should I keep the harder job, but with people that I love to work with?? Also, my current manager is so much nicer than my new one would be. She's great and always (and I mean always!!!) supports anything we do.

Help!! I'm so confused. I need some clear heads out there to give me an opinion! I think I know what I want to do (stay in my current job), but I'm not sure......

P.S. Becky if you read this, this lady wears so much perfume that you can sometimes smell it outside the door to the accounting office when she's working!! I'd be confined with that smell all the time! It makes me sick to my stomach and gives me a headache just being around her!

i'd say first it depends of your ambition, if you want "the easier" job and if you can get it, then go ! but if you really like the actual one, and people around too, and if it's so evident you will get troubles after if you change, then just stay .... if you enjoy what you do everyday, it's the most important.

Go for the better job - if you get it theyll get over it. As someone told me when I started work, if you wanna get ahead it dont always mean making friends. You gotta think about yourself and what you want forget everyone else.

Let us know how it goes

I'd say dont let ANYONE put you off for applying for a new job! I'd also say at the end of the day dont let anyone pressure you into making the wrong desicion.

If it was me, i'd still apply and if i got the job in question, i'd get my head down and show them how wrong they were for doubting me!

I think you already answered your own question.

To me the people I work with mean a lot. The job I am at now I took because of the people (mostly my boss ). Of course provided I like the work. I had some major pain in the ass bosses and co-workers --- it was hell. Every day was endless. I hated Mondays. Now that I get along great with all my co-workers and especially my boss, my whole life is different.

Just because it is an easier job doesn't mean it wouldn't be difficult to work there.

As for the lady that cuts you out now, she'll get over it. Too bad she has to act in such an uprofessional manner and it would raise a big red flag for me as to whether or not I would want to work there.

Good luck.

Well, thank you for giving your opinions. It was a hard decision for me to make. My current boss offered me a raise to stay in the position I'm in now. Looks like I"ll be staying right where I am! :P

That was going to be my comment Jenn - which position pays better. Screw nicer and more important and all that stuff - we all work because we need the money. If working with the unpleasant associate paid more I'd say go for it - even if you didn't get it at least you would have tried.

As corny as this sounds, I think you should go with what your heart tells you to do. If your instinct is that something is bad, you're probably right. But decide whether your gut feeling is warning you about a potentially bad situation or if you're just having a case of nerves related to impending change.

Keep in mind, that if you do get the job, all you have to have is a doctor's note explaining that you have an allergy to perfume/chemical sensitivity and the lady will HAVE to stop wearing perfume because your supervisers will HAVE to watch out for your health. Perfume is a known chemical allergen and a health risk. Some of the ingredients used in it are carcinogens. There is NO benefit to perfume and it causes health problems for other people.
