As for the DVD-Video though Jess I still recommend converting your videos first with something like TMPGEnc, even on highest quality settings it wouldn't take a day to convert a few files, presuming they aren't many hours long anyway.

Ahhh ok ! it's simply that i can save my files on a cd and then i can delete them from my pc ??

But how can i be sure it's really on the cd if i can't play it ? I'd like to be sure ...

And i'll try again TMPGEnc, first maybe with only one file and another day !!!

I think everything is fine with the dvd burner, i installed it exactly like the cd burner was ! Can you see any reason why it's taking days to encode 2 hours of videos ?
I tried it first with a cd, i managed to burn exactly like before with the cd burner.

ps : Thanks Neil

The problem won't be with the burner Jess, it is most likely with Nero, and perhaps it may depend on your pc aswell, what sort of spec is it?

As for the file backup all you have to do to check the disc afterwards is put it back into your pc and go into My Computer and look at the drive to see what is on the disc. Its only the same as backing up with a CD, but you can fit 4.37gb on a DVD, but only 700mb on a CD

TMPGEnc is one of the best programs I've seen for converting video, it has a nice Wizard style approach so you can choose DVD and then you select your file sources and you can set how much of the disc you want it to fill (and it alters the quality depending on that). There are other programs, perhaps take a look at www.videohelp.com there is a good forum on there you could ask for more detailed help probably than here.

I know i can check what's on the cd, it's just that i'm afraid to lose my files but if you say it's ok i trust you.

My poor old pc is 6 years now, 20Go and 256 RAM (i tried to put more than 128 like it was first but there is nothing to do ...) Intel Celeron 1.00 GHz, i'm still with the windonws pack 1, don't want the pack 2.

I thought maybe i did something wrong when i installed the burner but as i said for burning cd's it's working.

I'll try TMPGEnc with one file (maybe tomorrow), we'll see. I'm glad i bought some DVD's RW !!!!

If you backup data and then check it and it is all there you could safely delete the files from your hard drive, just be careful with the disc, if you are worried about losing the files you could burn 2 copies, and keep one somewhere else untouched so it wouldn't be damaged, and use the other when you need the files.

Perhaps having a 1ghz processor and 256mb ram would account for taking so long to convert files, at high quality mine can take a couple of hours to do an hour long file, and mine is 2.6ghz with 1gb ram, so if you have files which are longer and if it is doing them in high quality it could take a while with those specs. Also if you don't have 4gb space free when making your discs it doesn't have anywhere to put the temp files, so that could also be something to check on.

For the temps files it said there wasn't enough space so i moved files from one HD to another and it was enough. (it's in two 9.76 Go and 8.87 Go)

So i have to buy some cd's to burn this files in data.

I'll try maybe tomorrow to burn one file on a DVD, i'll encode it before with MPGEnc, we'll see ...
But yes maybe it won't work because my pc is not good enough.

Ok so ... the problem for converting files is maybe because of Nero.

I'm a bit lost. Can't think of all that anymore today io think lol

Thanks, i'll let you know !!!

Stupid me !

Tonight I tried again to watched a VCD i made a few weeks ago with Robbie's stuff .... I tried a few weeks ago and my dvd player couldn't played it so i thought it can't play VCD's. So i bought a DVD burner .... But tonight when i tried it worked ! So i found a VCD with lots of things on it

I made another one with other things but as i thought my dvd player can't play vcd's i deleted it cause my son needed a cd ..... And on it there was what i removed from my pc the other day to make space, i thought there was a problem with the files and that i could never burn them

So now i can burn my Robbie's files, and i can watch it on my dvd player !

But i lost some realy nice stuff .....

And i still can't make a DVD .... But i've got a DVD burner ... Oh well ....

ps : i'm not blonde .....

You could have burned the MPGs (VCD, whatever....) to a data DVD to make room and save them for later. Never mind that you can just watch them on your computer. Oh well...use this as your learning experience to never delete things like that.
