look at it this way.

some guy with a gun wants to kill u.

some guy with a knife wants to kill u.

you have a gun.

now the smartest thing to do here is shoot the man with the knife. not as dangerous as the man with the gun and in turn the man with the gun might decide not try and kill u because they've seen what u did to someone else who was after u.

it pretty much comes down to detterance.
