Guard Dog Chases Medics from Dying Owner
Wed July 30, 2003 11:08 AM ET
MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Russian man paid the price for training his guard dog too well when the snarling animal held off paramedics long enough for him to die of heart failure.
The ferocious Staffordshire bull terrier kept doctors at bay as they tried to approach the middle-aged patient on Wednesday.

"Doctors and the man's wife tried to approach the man for a long time, but the dog was furious and would not allow it," Andrei Rudomyotov, a regional police chief, said by telephone from the city of Chelyabinsk near the Ural mountains. "The doctors had to call the police, and our officers shot the dog, but by the time the doctors could get in, the patient was dead."

Russians living in small apartments often own large and energetic dogs. Fighting dogs, such as bull terriers, are fashionable as a means of protecting property against post-Soviet crime.

I feel sorry for the man, but it's odd

You feel sorry for the man?? What about the poor dog that did what it was trained to do and then got killed for doing it!! Now, that's sad!

I agree! The dog was doing what it was supposed to do.

i dunno man u'll find that most big ferocious lookign dogs r the tamest.

rehearsal studio's r really good covers for drug running and things like that cos the taxman can;t reallyu prove how much they make from selling rehearsal time or not so alot of money can go in from certain unscrupulus avenues.

anyways the place we rehearse in is no exception and had a shitload of things going on down there, they even had a chop shop going on in the next room from the studio.

anyways places like this need protection of some sort and they had this massive bull terrier that would put the shitter up u just looking at it but on closer inspection it was justa big softie that would run away if u made any loud noise or sudden movements.

anyways kinda ironic story in a way but why is it that we'll put dogs, cats and pretty much any other animal down for a number of reasons going from anything from a broken leg to a stroke to end their suffering but we still won;t extend that choice to humans?

Euthanasia is allowed in Holland, although under very strict guidelines. I agree with you though Jim, I also think we give up on animals too quickly, we just seem to think that it's just an animal so worth less.

iwas poiting out that we'd rather put an animal out of its pain than a human rather than saying we kill animals too readilly.

im not a particular lover of animals in anyways or form but my dog had a stroke a few years ago, couldn;t walk, could hardly see and couldn't stop itself doing the toilet. we had him put down straight away.

My gran had a stroke a few years ago too. pretty much the same situation but shes stuck in a home for quite possibly the rest of her life not really knowing whats happening and it's no way to live.

i've said on several occasions that when my time comes i'd rather do it by myself than die in a hospital or in a home and i mean it.
