Programs do it by finding specific points and then stretching the image and warping it to fit, and then attempting to blend the colours at the seams. It is more difficult to do it manually, though can often give good results if you spend a long time doing it.

Thats a cool pic Ice! The blending of the pics was all automatically done with that piece of software?! That's probably on of the best result I ever saw from any program that creates panorama's automatically! Most of them turn out really bad... I never even tried to use any of the software, but use Photoshop mysqlf for blending pics.

I use Photoshop to do mine, it isn't too difficult as long as your images are pretty close to begin with, which is easier with larger landscapes, but in small scales it can be more difficult to join them and if the lighting changes between taking the pictures it can be harder to match the colours.

Any ideas on one to get? If you want better quality pictures I'd recommend a digital SLR as opposed to a normal compact one, they may be bigger but they give better images I think.

...and you'll be able to take your own pictures of Liverpool instead of taking all mine

Kev!

If you are going to buy yourself a digital camera I would recommend a coolpix 4800 (Nikon), it's a compact camera. It was rather expensive when it was introduced but now the price has gone down. It’s "only" 4 mpixel camera, but I've never seen such colours from a compact camera before!! And it has a quite good "real" zoom. Otherwise Neil's advice isn't bad but more expensive.. In that case I would go for a Canon EOS 350D, it's a nice camera.

Perhaps there is an updated version of the 4800, that’s even better, I don’t know.

It's in Beta stage and it is still free, althoug the regular version probably won't be. Check it out: http://www.cs.ubc.ca/~mbrown/autostitch/autostitch.html

Oh, and the key to making a good panorama is making sure you take the pictures correctly. You have to have points that can be seen in both images your going to combine etc. It takes a little effort, but if it works, it's worth it.
