Default New Zealand / Australia trip

Hey so I'm going to the north island of New Zealand for 10 days, followed by 4 weeks in Australia, travelling up the east Coast, and probably going as far North as Townsville in a camper van.

Anyway, i know we got a fair bit of people from NZD/AUS - and im looking for things to do! Note that we're sticking to the North Island and West coast mostly. We will be travelling in June/July as well - so winter months.

Is there anything we need to do?

We are for sure doing things like Byron Bay and Gold Coast, but I want to hear some ideas from locals!

Thanks.

Depends what you want to do really - if you can change your mind on just staying on the North Island in new zealand I'd encourage you to drive down the west coast of the south island (Greymouth -> Queenstown, stop at least at pancake rocks, Hokitika and Fox glacier) In Queenstown you've got all the adventure tourism you can shake a stick at plus take a day to go out on a cruise at either Milford or Doubtful sound... North Island's still cool but I may be a little biased haha, I wouldn't spend much time in Auckland if I were you, Bay of Islands then move south - stop at Rotorua, Taupo and Whanganui on the way down to Wellington - I recommend spending more time in Wellington than Auckland. Much cooler place and no where near as high strung. Plus if you don't want to do a proper visit to the South Island you can still catch a ferry to Picton which is a pretty little town and at least say you've been.

On the way up to Townsville (why?) check out Sunshine Coast and Noosa if you're up for nice beaches that aren't quite as commercial as GC. Also, if you're heading as far south as Byron you might as well carry on and check out Nimbin which is a cool little hippy/weed based town full of colourful graffiti and people who smell questionable wearing hemp based clothing. It's fun. Take some time to check out Brisbane too - it doesn't have a (natural) beach but it is a cool town - spend a night in Fortitude Valley, visit the Koala Sanctuary and Moreton Island, hike up Mount Coot-tha... there's plenty to do round there

Hope that helps!

Thanks - Honestly the south Island of New Zealand is hard because of it being difficult to get there, and even knowing anyone there. But I'm gonna take everything you said into account and show your post to my friend!

And Phil, If we're in Adelaide, which is actually a possibility, I'll facebook you for sure! It's only about 14 hours from Sydney, so a very doable drive.

Well it should be easy to get tickets... they only have about three fans.

Erik, I'm guessing you're not coming far as WA but if you do ever find yourself in Perth, feel free to hit me up and I'll think of something cool to do.

Hahaha! Preach!

But Agony does have a good point. You should try catch an AFL footy match if you can. Especially one at the MCG. Tickets should be relatively easy to purchase.

Yeah Panda! You're totes missing out by not heading to the beautiful west and visitng Perth I understand though, it is a far way away from the other side of the country, especially if you're limited on time.

As for things to do, you should see if you can do some four wheel driving along the beach. There's plenty of isolated stretches of coast where you can do that. That's always fun. Though if you're coming in winter you'll need a jacket.

Jacket. Lol. It gets -40 C where I live - that's usually when I wear a jacket.

Also yeah - still planning things. But Perth probably won't happen. It's much too far away for me. Thanks though! I'm gonna look into beach quadding
