That's the big difference between Guns N' Roses and Bon Jovi. Bon Jovi started out relativily weak (Bon Jovi, 7800) and it was Slippery When Wet what made hem famous.

Guns N' Roses started out with a really strong album, Appetite For Destruction. They got a lot of press attention (riots at shows etc.). They were one of the fist 80's bands that were not only talking about happy things. They were singing about the destruction of the world, drugs, prostitution, and about getting away from it all.

Just as BJ came in the right time, GNR did as well!! Appetite is still being sold, they already have sold may millions of copies. It's a legendary album by a legendary band. Remeber what Jon and Obie are talking about in BJTV #4. You have to be dead to sell records or become legends. They don't really mean that, but the fact GNR doesn't excist anymore in their original line up helps to create the myth.

Everybody across the world know BJ and GNR. I can't say that of System of a Down.

I dont think for the past 10 years the music world seems capable of turning out legends anymore.

To be a legend you have to be different, everything sounds the same now, nothing is new. In order to get the legend status I think most will end up behaving like Oasis. Boy George or the Spice Girls. They are more known for attitudes/ styling than making real grounded music .

BAND´S that have the potential to be a legend ?
1) U2
2) Aerosmith
3) Bon Jovi
4) i don´t think Def Leppard will be legend´s in the future (they are not that big anymore)
(but very very good)

here are a few band in my oppinion that are legend´s right now and forever

1) INXS (michael was one of the best leadsingers on earth - god bless him)
2) AC / DC
3) Ozzy Osbourne (metal legend)
4) Michael Jackson (if you like him or not - HE`s the man and a legend)
5) Madonna ( i hate madonna - her, her music, her style, her voice- everything - but she´s a legend) *waaahh*

I think, that to be classed as legends (in the music world) you must be known (and loved, or at least liked) all over the world. I'd have to agree with WILDJOVIMAN in saying that,

AC/DC
Ozzy Osbourne (and Black Sabbeth)
Michael Jackson
Madonna

are legends. There is also,

Elvis
Hendrix
Queen
The Beatles
Led Zeppelin

and more that should be added to the list.

I'd say that Bon Jovi, Aerosmith and U2 have almost already made that legend status, you could go up to anybody between 13 and 50 in the streets and if you asked them if they'd heard of these bands, 9 out of 10 (if not 10 out of 10) will say that they had heard of them.

I think that if Guns N' Roses had stayed together for longer then they would have made this mark aswel but I don't think they could just use Appetite For Destruction as there only famous album. The same with Def Leppard and Hysteria, unless they produce another GREAT album then I don't think they would make the legend status.

in GnR"s case i say they are legends(may be because i"m a big fan of them)..when the band can earn 30,000 & more people after totally spliting up all real people of the band.. & after whole 9 totally silent years..what should u call the band??..to count they have made only 62 songs in c.d.s but they were like the best of the rock u can say(do not consider spegetti)...
