It wasn't the media anything. It was started by some dumbass "patriot" who owned a diner in North Carolina. Then a couple of Congressional windbags did it in the Capital Building cafeteria.
And the newspapers ran with it and couldn't wait to publish all of the stories about it. So yes, the media took a few isolated cases and turned it into a big deal.
