it's quite simple:

people wearing their hoods up intimidate a large percentage of their shoppers and / or use them to disguise themselves shoplifting or vandalising stuff thus they say: alot of people wearing hoods are going to annoy people actually spending money in here or are going to be nicking stuff so let's stop them.

It works much the same as the police identifying possible offenders based on their stereotype and searching/ questioning them as a result.

I know this may be an abonimation in your books adrian but the chances of a 17 year old arse in a tracksuit carrying a knife or shoplifting is substantially higher than a guy in a gucci suit

Maybe this isn't making sense to me because we've got differing cultures, and definitely differing definitions (say that five times fast!) of freedom...that's probably a problem here...

But according to what I would believe to be rational thinking, you don't stem crime by banning sweatshirts, you do it by prosecuting those that commit the crimes. Here's another thought - why doesn't the US have a high rate of shoplifting? Honestly I don't know, but we've got tons of hoodie-wearing teens walking through our malls every day, and they don't seem to be causing a problem...

you stop people coming into a shopping centre who are most likely to commit offences (ie those wearing hoodies) and crime rates in the shoppign centre go down....

my pub won't allow anyone who's drunk in the door or anyone wearing a rangers and celtic strip in because it just leads to trouble. not all the time but it's much more likely to turn into something than a family coming in for sunday lunch and a glass of wine.

Is it right to deny me entrance to a store because someone MIGHT not like what's on my shirt?
A hood is used as protection from weather, not something "required" indoors in a mall, whereas clothing decorations are simply that, decorations. Others may not like them but no matter what happens they can look away, but when hoods are used to hide faces during shoplifting or attacks it means that people need to look but can't.

Obviously it is a persons right to hide themselves should they so wish, and as such I wonder if this rule applies to women of whatever culture it is that hides their faces.

So if you were shopping at night and you saw a group of youths hanging around with their hoods up you wouldn't feel intimidated?

If I was in a mall and saw teens hanging around with hoods up? I wouldn't give 'em a second thought. Honest. Again, this comes back to "Why doesn't the US have a high rate of shoplifting?" Why are our malls safer places to be than yours are, when we allow such obviously dangerous clothing in ours.

Here's another thought: Who here honestly thinks that teens bent on mugging, knifing, and mayhem are going to obey or not find a way around hoodie laws? If I am seriously contemplating shoplifting, whether I can wear a hood is not going to affect my decision. I'm going grab what I want and burn sneaker, or stick it in my pockets, shirt, jacket, etc. Or I'm going to wear any type of hat and sunglasses.

I'm really surprised no one has thought of nudist shopping malls as a theft deterent. Think how few places there'd be to hide stolen merchandise.

adrian you obviously haven't worked in a shop.

the amount of times I had to grab someone who I didn't clock as a shoplifter: 0

number of times I had to grab people who walked in the door who I did think, hmmmm they look dodgy: more than I can remember.

will banning hoodies in the shopping mall stop shoplifting? nope but stopping the MAIN OFFENDERS of sed shoplifting coming in will greatly decrease it.

In Virgina Beach, I saw this one kid say one thing to someone and he was grabbed by two security guards with guns, and dragged out.
You guys chuck 'em out before they have a chance to shoplift

An isolated incident. I've been to plenty of malls, including the mall with the highest traffic in the state, and have yet to see someone tossed out before doing anything. On second thought, are you sure you weren't seeing police? Last time I checked, mall security didn't get guns.
