[ Life of the companies ] 09/03/2003 Morocco: One year of prison for the fans of heavy-metal In Morocco, it is not good to listen to heavy-metal. Fourteen young musicians were condemned to the prison, at the end of a scandalous lawsuit. © Metallica to read testimonys of several sites of press, these is a ubuesque lawsuit which was held last week in Morocco. Fourteen fans of heavy-metal, which listens among other groups of Metallica or Iron Maiden, were condemned to the prison. Reason: their "satanic" practice is likely to attack Islam. They were arrétés in Casablanca, on their premises for the majority, at at the end of February 2003. The verdict of their lawsuit was returned on March 6. Result: between one and twelve months of prison. Firm. This sentence caused an agitation and an incomprehension at the national level. However, no obvious offence concerning an unspecified sectarian attitude would have been noted. According to the press, the musicians are for the majority of good family and never were the subject of any complaint nor critical. Exhibits: CD of hard rock, posters, rings and musical instruments. An arsenal considered to be dangerous for the moral order. The attraction for a contrary music with the moralities, English texts, religious symbols... all that inevitably translated the deviance of an unhealthy spirit. Such was the vision of the Moroccan judge. Fortunately, several Moroccan newspapers knew to carry a more lucid glance on their youth. A petition is in hand to require a revision of the lawsuit. Indonesia is a biggest moslem country, but our government allowed the musicians to express their feelings about art. It doesn't matter if you choose heavy metal, punk,or underground (black metal or grindcore) as long as you're not breaking the law or doing some crimes.
