Default Organ donation

Sir Liam Donaldson has said that it should be an automatic system that as soon as you die in England that your organs are put up for donation .You can opt out of this system if you so wish .Do you think this is a good or bad idea? One side of the argument it would save alot more lives but then on the other should doctors have the right to do this? You could say well if they dont want to donate then they can opt out but what if they didn't know and get taken apart against their wishes .You can read the full article here

I think that should be the same way in every country. Paperwork should be for opting out, not in. I want to be a donor but I find the paperwork creepy somehow.

In principle, I think the system should be opt-in rather than opt-out. In reality, I don't think it matters. I'd still donate no matter what, and I don't think people care enough for it to be a big deal.

This way they would get way more organs. How many people say that they would donate organs but never give a written permission because they simply forget so the doctors can't do anything. The other way around would be better.

I don't see the problem with it. A lot of people don't mind the idea of giving their organs, but just never get around to opting in. If it's the other way around, those who don't want to donate will make sure they get around to signing out.

I can see the arguement that our bodies aren't public property, but what good is your heart, liver etc to you when you're dead?

It should be opt out IMO. If you give a toss about what happens to your organs when you're dead (why?) then you'll be bothered to fill out some paperwork telling them to leave you alone.

I'm on the register, and I carry a card already, so it makes no difference to me

yeah it should be opt out.

i don't think you'll find many people who would argue having more organs is a bad thing yet there's people who won't donate either through choice or just because they don't bother registering.

it's kind of like saying better education and health are priorities but **** paying taxes to fund it

In Belgium everyone is a donor, however you can sign out if you wish so. Still when you bring thins on when someone dies, esp. someone young, it is a shock for family members and most of them don't want it. We had a young guy who hung himself last weekend and we saved him (were there just in time, he was breathing as soon as we ventilated and had a heartbeat) but he's braindead, and his parents refuse to have his organs donated. I understand that and respect that, still is it all worth it? He could save some lives, but I can understand the parents point, except it's false hope...

They can use my organs however.
