I think the difference is too big, if it was £50, you could try, and if they were asking you to give the money back, it could be possible, but this is much money ... it you buy something with it, and they ask you to refund, be sure to can do it, otherwise you'd lost your job and ... more

remember though - it was their mistake. For all they know you thought you already had a lot of money in there anyway...
if for some reason (and they won't) they said we made a big mistake can you give us back this money please... you say "oh sorry, i wasn't aware of that... I've not got it to give you back in one payment because i have bought something with it but you can deduct it from my wages, or if you can wait 3 weeks i can pay it all back to you"
